Art and Design

One of the themes for this week is art and design. We thought it would be interesting to look at examples of art and design from different countries and think about some of the similarities and differences between them.

Look at the following examples of art and design from Kenya, France, Thailand, the UK, Japan, the USA, the Arabic world (one from Saudi Arabia, the other I'm not sure), China and Taiwan. Can you guess which country each work of art is from? How old do you think each work is? How can you tell if it is recently painted or old? Which ones do you like? What do you like about them? And finally, do you think making art is a universal impulse, and if you do, what makes it universal? If you don't think it is universal, is there anything that connects all the images below?
As usual leave your comments, and this time it would be particularly good if you could post an image of an art work or an example of design that you particularly like and tell us why you like it.

  1. We think that making art is a universal impulse because it's one of ways to express the past events in different dynasties, our emotions or thoughts which are invisible. In addition, art is essential because it makes us happy and gives us energy.

  3. In general, we believe that all the paintings are old and traditional, and they reflect different cultures around the world. For example, the picture No.7 gives us a deep impression of Turkish Islamic culture.

We can take picture No.11 as an example to describe, it contains traditional chinese house which overlooks to the sea that has several boats. In the back of house, there are a vast amount of mountains. The picture has simple colours and not complicated.

To sum up, arts play a crucial role in civilisation, human health and history.

  4. It is reasonable to assume that these paintings show some or many cultures and it concern many people in the world.

However,to be honest, I dont like paintings as much as poetry because I see them all the same, with all of my respect to the other side of view.

I dont understand the aim of these paintings, nevertheless I can tell that n6 and n11 are incredibly beautiful to focus on the beauty of mather nature.

  8. I think most of them are quite old because I see they presents the past and the culture of where they come from.

I do like 4,10,12 I like the colours and the way of matching every thing but the most I like about them, their meaning, I see each one has a different meaning but all of them have an invesible and mysterious story behind it.

Art is something peapole do like to do it around the whole world because they might have an opportunity to express them self through it
